52 in 1: The Haunting Of Maddy Clare

For week 21, I read The Haunting Of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James. I picked up this book along with a few others on one of those “buy two, get one free” tables, intrigued by the ghost story and the setting between the World Wars. I already enjoy Agatha Christie novels, which are set in similar eras (give or take), and hoped this would be similar enough.

I’m not sure how to describe the book without giving away the good bits. Suffice to say, it is a ghost story and several of the main characters form a sort of ghost-hunting team with the advanced technology of the time, a device that records sounds on ribbon tapes rather than records, and photographs. I like ghost-hunting too, so it was an interesting contrast to the fancy gizmos the professionals use today. The characters are interesting, the language consistent, and the tone appropriately creepy. I’m glad I picked it up; I fully intend to find more of St. James’ books.
