For week 18, I read Grave Witch by Kalayna Price.
So, this was another fluffy Vagina Fantasy type of novel. One where the heroine is some flavor of magical, unique, powerful person who can save the world from something no one else can, or will, and proves she is the Most Awesomest Of Them All. And there’s sex in there, or at least the promise of sex with a terribly hot bishi boy (or boys, plural), but it is generally more or less tasteful and retains its R rating. I’d like to say I’m too good for this, but I seem to keep reading them, don’t I?
It’s not a bad book, don’t get me wrong. The writing is competent enough for me to not be drawn out of the narrative by the awkward phrasing or poorly-conceived blocking that tends to trip up writers in this burgeoning genre. It’s easier to notice when something is bad than when it is good, and in this case what I noticed most was (AGAIN) poor copy-editing. Misuse of homonyms, leaving off letters, missing words, random spaces in the middle of words…things that a human should have caught, but a spell-check program might not. That said, I don’t know if I’ll pick up the next book in the series. I might if it’s in e-format; I have too many physical collections of books as it is.
